Uniform Requirements

GENERAL
1. Facial hair No beards, no long sideburns. Hair must be cut short and be off the ears and collar, but may be long on top. Mustaches are permitted on men over 40 years of age only. Two or three days beard growth for most events are permitted. Women's hair should be pulled back and tied. No makeup is permitted. 2. Eyewear Eyewear must be appropriate to the time period. Round wire rim glasses are recommended. Contact lenses are permitted. 3. Subdued Insignia Although prescribed by regulations, subdued insignia is not recommended until more research is done on how common it was. Subdued buttons painted olive or black are permitted and recommended on the M43 tunic. The M43 tunic does however need to be worn with the typical subdued olive shoulder boards with raspberry piping. 4. Captured Items In general, captured items are not permitted. 5. Other No earrings or modern jewelry are permitted. Tatoos and body piercings should not be visible. UNIFORM 1. Tunic (gymnastiorka) M35 Tunic The M35 tunic in cotton or wool with correct collar tabs. Collar tabs are raspberry with black piping. Metal crossed rifles badges are to be affixed to the collar tabs. This tunic is required and is for our primary impression. M43 Tunic The M43 tunic, with or without breast pockets, is highly recommended for some events. Field shoulder boards piped with raspberry branch of service color are worn with this style of tunic. Note: M35 tunics continued to be worn though the end of the war. The collar patches were removed and the M43 shoulder boards were added. 2. M35 Trousers (sharovari) These are the standard semi-breeches in cotton or wool with coffin-shaped knee patches. 3. Sidecap (pilotka) In cotton or wool with a star insignia badge. 4. Footwear Russian jackboots (sapogi) are preferred. Low boots (botinki) must be approved by the committee and used with leg wraps (obmotki). Leg wraps (obmotki) may be black, khaki or gray material. Period correct U.S. Army or British style low boots without toe caps are acceptable. 5. Waistbelt or Suspenders A Russian pattern web trouser waistbelt or a leather waistbelt of the Russian pattern is preferred for the trousers. Proper period suspenders may be used instead of the trouser waistbelt. It should have leather tabs with buttoholes in them, not plastic or naughahyde. WINTER GEAR 1. Greatcoat (shinel) Highly recommended. Appropriate collar tabs are preferred. Collar tabs are to be raspberry with black piping with metal crossed rifles insignia affixed to them. 2. Padded Jacket (telogreika) Padded Winter Jacket and Trousers The early style jacket with stand and fall collar is recommended. 3. Fur Hat (shapka ushanka) Fake Fur Hat with star badge. 4. Gloves or Mittens Black or gray wool. Russian postwar three-fingered mittens are also permitted. These have a rag wool lining and an olive canvas outer body with reddish-brown flannel supports on the back sides of the mittens. OPTIONAL WINTER ITEMS 1. Winter Soft Helmet (Budyonovka or shlem) This is the early war wool winter fold down cap with red star stitched on the front with a red enameled star badge pinned in its center. 2. Felt Boots (valenki) Especially good and keep your feet warm in subzero temperatures. Best to wear when the snow is dry. 3. Winter Overwhites Either the one-piece overwhite set with hood which is cut along the same pattern as the greatcoat, or the two-piece smock with hood and separate trousers. |
